Restaurant “U Houdku” – a large dose of Czech meals

If you are looking for a restaurant, which with its attributes resembles more of a pub, then search no more! U houdků restaurant is located in Prague 3 Žižkov nearby VŠE university. The management is aware of this advantage, therefore you can see student lunch menu offers, which change on daily basis. Regarding the cuisine, it’s a typical Czech cuisine, so foreigners may try out Czech meals for the first time. Accompanied by the pub style restaurant, people have a unique opportunity to experience Czech atmosphere.

I am a sophomore at VŠE university. I have been visiting U Houdků restaurant ever since my friend had invited me there for lunch because it was close. My first impression was that it was a pub. With typical Czech pub visitors along with wooden furniture, It all gave this “olden times” feeling, like you travelled back 50 years in the past. Another strong points would be prices, student menus and the serving. All these points go hand in hand with each other because the ratio is what makes them the “strong points”. The prices are optimal or even a little low. Price wise, all student menus are worth every penny. As for servings, the quantity is also larger than average servings. Sometimes they give me so much food that I really have to force myself to eat it all as I hate leaving leftovers and then for the rest of the day I have an intense stomachache.

Before you visit the restaurant, first take a look at the menu of Restaurant U Houdků.

Czech cuisine is a specific Central European type of cuisine, which is known for its soups as an appetizer and various sauces with dumplings as a main dish. Because the Czech Republic is so rich on ingredients, you can also find meals with wild animals and fishes as a part of Czech menu. Another important ingredient are mushrooms, which are common in Czechia during rainy seasons. Many types of pies and pastries, which are popular in Europe actually come from Czech cuisine. Despite the diverse menu, not many meals actually originate from Czechia.

As mentioned above, a traditional lunch consists of soup and a main dish. Soups are mostly made of vegetables, various seasoning and a bit of meat. They are thick and fill your stomach quite quickly, therefore they alone can be eaten as a main dish. As traditional soups are considered tripe, garlic, mushroom, bean, goulash soups.

As for the main dishes, they consist mainly of meat, primarily pork, beef and chicken meat. Traditional meat food would be Schnitzel, Roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut and roasted carp.

An irreplaceable part of Czech cuisine are the beforementioned sauces. They are considerably dense so they will quickly satisfy your hunger. Their main and probably the only side dish are dumplings. The most famous ones would be cream sauce, tomato sauce, mushroom sauce, dill sauce and sirloin sauce.
